Enlarged Prostate (BPH) Symptoms & Treatments – Q&A with Dr Ronny Tan

Video Transcript:

Many current treatments for prostate enlargement are known to cause sexual side effects. But what if they don’t have to?
Keep watching to find out more.

Hello everyone, I’m Dr. Gerald Tan, Specialist Urologist at Advanced Urology. Benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH is a very common condition affecting men as they get older. In short, their prostates get larger, obstructing the opening of the bladder and making urination a lot more difficult.

In recent years, many new surgical innovations have come about for the treatment of prostatic obstruction. One of such exciting treatments is the Prostatic Urethral Lift or PUL. In essence, the PUL procedure involves the passage of an endoscope through the penis up into the prostate, where two to six stainless steel implants are then inserted permanently into the prostate lobes.

This allows the prostate lobes to be pushed apart and the channel leading out of the bladder to be wide open, thereby improving emptying of the bladder and improving urine flow for patients. The PUL procedure is commonly performed under monitored sedation or a short general anesthetic in the operating theatre or day surgery center. This takes around 10 to 15 minutes to complete, and the patient then wakes up and is observed. Once he’s able to pass urine, he can go home.

The main advantage of the PUL procedure is the absence of removal of any excess prosthetic tissue. This results in minimal bleeding and pain and a very quick recovery after the surgery. And patients often go home without needing a catheter. Increasingly, more and more studies now validate the PUL procedure as delivering  rapid relief from bothersome urinary symptoms, as well as sustained improvement in urine flow for most men up to five years. Most importantly, the vast majority of patients undergoing the PUL procedure do not experience any sexual side effects. How’s that for quality of life?

If you are bothered by urinary symptoms, do not hesitate to consult your urologist who will do a detailed assessment of your prostate and your urine flow and advise you on the various surgical and medical options available today.
